Last Thursday, a new promoter in the Nottingham music scene, Joe McCaffery, organized an event at the Secret Garden called Genesis. The promotional material leading up to the event described it as a night dedicated to deep house with intense energy. The lineup was incredibly impressive, featuring artists such as Tehs LV, JP (Uh), Darlow, and Eddie Chitnis. Suffice it to say, it lived up to expectations.
Secret Garden offers a distinct outdoor atmosphere compared to most venues in Nottingham, which I believe matched the music perfectly. Neon lights and lush greenery adorned the walls, complementing the tunes from the skilled DJs and setting a fantastic tone for the evening. Although the crowd was slow to warm up, the early arrivals were evidently enthusiastic about the music. Once the headliners appeared on stage, the dancefloor quickly filled up.
The DJs delivered outstanding performances, each demonstrating expertise and offering a unique sound, which is rare in a genre that can often be binary and repetitive. Tehs kicked off the evening magnificently, drawing the crowd closer to the stage. JP's energetic tracks had me nodding my head even when I was far from the dancefloor. The highlights of the night, Darlow and Chitnis, both brought their best. Each set transitioned seamlessly into the next. They were tight, with no dead air.
The audio quality was clear and rich, the lighting effectively created the right atmosphere, and the event was well-organized. The bar was never overcrowded, and the staff appeared very relaxed, friendly, and attentive.
Genesis delivered precisely what was promised in the promotion: an evening of unfiltered entertainment at a fantastic venue that's hidden in plain sight. The DJs performed flawlessly, and the crowd was locked in. If Genesis returns to Nottingham again, do yourself a favor and buy a ticket.
