Cherry Stone is rapidly emerging as one of Nottingham's most thrilling young and underground acts. This is evident from their addition to the arsenal of Castle Records, one of the city's newest independent record labels.
These recent developments for the band have resulted in the release of their debut single, "Am I Naïve?". This track is raw, emotional, and layered, sure to resonate with your inner teenager. Oli, Kian, Cody, and Cody create a distorted sonic landscape in their single, reminiscent of the grungy and slow-core tracks by The Smashing Pumpkins and Carissa's Weird.
In this interview, Cherry Stone discusses their origins, sources of inspiration, and the creation of their new track. You'll also learn about the exciting new projects they have planned for the future.
For those who haven't listened to your music yet, how would each of you describe it in one word?
Cody Marie: Honest
Kian: Nostalgic
Oli: Spunky
Cody: Sick!
How did Cherry Stone begin? How did you all come together, and what motivated you to form the band?
Cody Marie, Cody and Oli started it in college. Cody Marie met Kian at the playhouse and became friends. We all became very good friends and carried on from there.
Which music, personal experiences, and musicians do you believe most significantly shaped your sound and style?
Cody B: Pop punk technical guitar ska
Oli: Shoe-gazey emo vibes
Cody Marie: Pop music
Kian: Funk breakbeats jazz Cuban
Paramore influenced us as we all have our different genres and come together to create music holistically.
We have a common ground of us being teenage dirtbags and trying to find our way in life while all innately wanting to have a positive impact on the world, all from our experiences as we think as a collective that in the world we think that a lot of people are in our situation and want to unite people by our music
Your debut single "Am I Naïve?" is set to release on March 28th. Can you share the inspiration or story behind this track?
We started messing around with shoegaze chords, and the words came naturally, combining all of our own genres.
Apart from your upcoming EP, are you currently involved in any other projects or collaborations?
Ada who?
Ada Blue!
Smash the Stereo gig in August to support neurodivergent people in music. We’re going to collaborate with Ada Blue and we’re looking forward to it very much.
What should newcomers to your music anticipate from your live performances? How do your shows distinguish themselves from others?
Energy, fun, friendly, calm, inclusive, big vocals, togetherness, romance. We’re not robots for a performance; we’re people looking for a connection with our audience.
As a young band, how do you manage your creative differences, and what advice would you give to other young musicians starting their careers?
Non-Verbal Cues during performances. Technology: Utilize apps or group chats for quick communication about schedules, song ideas, or logistics. Practice together, understanding each other's creative roles. By focusing on these aspects, a band can create a strong communication framework that fosters collaboration and creativity. We would say be friends, take advice from other friends, and have a fun time. Don’t take yourself too seriously.
What are your expectations for Cherry Stone in the coming year? Are there any album plans?
Some extra followers on the socials (consistently), make a look for ourselves on the Nottingham scene, release more music, do some nice support gigs, and make people feel and watch our vibe with fan interaction. Sell out our first headline. We hope that we’ll release an album soon.
What message do you have for people who are listening to your music for the first time?
Thank you for listening. It means so much to us all. Stick around and follow our socials to see what we are up to and when more music is to be released.
Stay tuned for an exclusive interview and performance with Ada Blue coming soon...
